Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy is among the most empirically supported modalities for couples. It focuses on how interpersonal relationships influence our emotional well-being and how our partners can have a meaningful impact on those relationships. When they are responsive and validating, they can comfort us in times of distress and foster a sense of being valued, loved, and having purpose in our lives. Conversely, their lack of availability or critical judgment may cause intense emotional suffering.
This emotional effect may result in couples becoming entrapped in negative cycles, with partners triggering each other as a means of safeguarding themselves. Consequently, this fosters cycles of protection, defense, control, and submission, hurting both and preventing their needs from being met.
Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy aims to break these cycles and guide couples toward new ways of responding to one another, promoting deeper connection and validation.
